(QUESTION ASKED DURING A.S.K. FELLOWSHIP 7/31/16) C.D.
What is a good verse or verses to help with Self Control?
Steve Gillespie
Thank you for asking C.D. First off I would focus on GOD's promises; before I would even think about trying to control myself. What I mean by that is this, we are weak and if we could control ourselves we would have no need of Christ. So then we most first off turn our trust (FAITH) to him that said; No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it. (1 Corinthians 10:13) And to Him that said I am with you always. (Matthew 28:20) Which is the same one who said These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
A good thing to remember is that But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23) And GOD himself upon Christ's request sent his Spirit to dwell in us; and his fruit is Self Control. No mans fruit but the Spirit's fruit!!!!
Now, how then can we gain Self Control? God has through His servant Peter has given us the instructions. This with the Faith He has given and the Spirit He has given, We can have Self (or should I say Spirit) Control!
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. (2 Peter 1:5-9)
Add to your Faith-Virtue (morality, integrity)
Add to your Virtue-Knowledge (from God's Word)
Add to your Knowledge-Self-Control (Discipline yourself through His Word)
Add to your Self Control-Perseverance (Keep Running the race before you)
Add to your Perseverance-Godliness (Be Holy for I am Holy (Leviticus 11:44; 1 Peter 1:16)
Add to your Godliness-Brotherly Kindness (Treat people how you want to be treated)
Add to your Brotherly Kindness-LOVE (True Love For GOD is LOVE)

So I know I have shared a lot and I hope some of this really helps with your question; fell free to post back if you have further questions on this or any questions.

Last thing; my favorite verse to help with Self Control is a little reminder that God gave through His servant Paul And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. Colossians 3:23-25
